Continuing her mission to celebrate and center precolonial mythologies of the Philippines, Soprano and Sound Artist Micaela Tobin presents a preview of her upcoming experimental opera. APOLAKI tells the story of the God of Sun and War, as a means to discuss larger issues of settler colonialism, decolonization, diaspora, immigration, and climate change.

This installation performance features an interactive walking labyrinth designed by Carlo Maghirang, activated by movement artist Jay Carlon as the god Apolaki, with live music by Adam Starkopf and Micaela Tobin. This performance is a preview of the full-scale opera, which will premiere in Los Angeles in Summer of 2023.

Apolaki: Opera of the Scorched Earth is supported through the MAP Fund and is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by OUTsider Film & Arts Festival, LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS INC, and NPN. The Creation & Development Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). Micaela Tobin is a soprano, sound artist, and teacher based in Los Angeles, CA who specializes in experimental voice and contemporary opera. As a sound artist with a background in opera, Micaela integrates voice and electronics within the genres of noise and drone music. Her work incorporates ritualized gesture and amplified object-symbolism and explores her diasporic identity as a first-generation Filipina-American.
